FDA Recalls Frozen Shrimp Sold at Walmart Over Radiation Concerns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for certain frozen shrimp products sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand, after tests revealed traces of cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive isotope. The products were imported from Indonesia and distributed across multiple U.S. states.

This recall highlights both the complexity of global food supply chains and the ongoing vigilance required to protect consumers.

How the Recall Started

  • Customs Detection: U.S. Customs and Border Protection flagged suspicious shipments of frozen shrimp at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami.
  • FDA Testing: One batch of breaded shrimp tested positive for Cs-137 at about 68 Bq/kg. While this level is far below the FDA’s intervention limit of 1,200 Bq/kg, the finding prompted a precautionary recall.
  • Processing Concerns: The shrimp was linked to Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), which was also cited for unsanitary processing conditions.

Products Under Recall

The recall affects Great Value raw frozen shrimp with the following details:
 Lot Code                Best-by Date
8005540-1March 15, 2027
8005538-1March 15, 2027
8005539-1March 15, 2027

These products were sold at Walmart stores in 13 states, including Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Alabama, and more.

Consumer Safety: What’s the Risk?

What Should You Do if You Bought These Tomatoes?

  • Short-term exposure: The detected radiation levels are not high enough to cause immediate illness or radiation poisoning.

  • Long-term exposure: Repeated consumption of contaminated products could slightly increase the risk of health problems, including cancer, due to DNA damage from low-dose radiation.

For this reason, the FDA is urging consumers to take the recall seriously.

What Should Consumers Do?

  • Check your freezer for the recalled shrimp (lot codes and best-by dates listed above).
  • Do not eat or serve the product. Safely dispose of it or return it to Walmart for a refund.
  • Consult a doctor if you have consumed the shrimp and are experiencing health concerns.

FDA and Walmart’s Response

  • Import Ban: The FDA has placed an import alert on PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, blocking its shrimp products from entering the U.S. until further notice.
  • Ongoing Investigation: Authorities are working to trace the source of contamination and ensure no additional products are at risk.
  • Retail Action: Walmart has pulled all affected products from shelves and is cooperating with regulators to ensure consumer safety.

Final Takeaway

This recall serves as a reminder that even in large, modern food systems, unexpected hazards can appear. While the immediate risk may be low, proactive recalls like this one are crucial in maintaining consumer trust and protecting long-term health.
